Masters in Design Scene
Focus on developing the skills and knowledge required for professional stage designers, this program is based on the understanding that the multifaceted contribution to a production designer involves more than providing a visual background.
Under the stage direction of designer Christopher Barreca, whose teaching is informed by active design practice in international, regional and local Broadway, the curriculum explores all aspects of live performance as a collaborative process, with special attention to the formation of artistic vision, aesthetic sophistication, critical thinking and craftsmanship. Since scene designers are visual artists working in theater, the program is closely related to other visual arts programs at CalArts and dance programs, performance, film and video.
Specialization in Painting Scene Design Scene
Disposition of the MFA Design program applicants Scene, this specialization is under the supervision of Mary Heilman scenic artist, who maintains deep connections to the professional community. The curriculum combines rigorous courses painting scene with the direct application of new techniques and materials and traditional processes in a wide range of productions of the Theatre School.
The training is based on design courses, graphic and perspective drawing, lighting, scenery and props construction, play analysis and theater history.
Specialization in Design Scene Video Performance
Video Performance at CalArts specialization trains visionary artists in the creation of interactive tools and moving images of live art and time-based. The program will focus on four main areas of application: Integrated Performance Media (including theater, opera, dance and concerts), interactive installation and the specific site of Art, Architecture and surfaces of digital imaging, and "Living Room Interactive "(the use of physical sensors, advanced display technology, remote participants socially networked, and narrative fiction on a self-guided experience). The program focuses on the development process of each student 's artistic, technological skills / software, and knowledge of contemporary media theory in the lab and classes debate.El oriented group focused, small MFA students Interactive Media will focus on personal projects and the Institute under the direct tutelage of his advisers. The program aims to attract a variety of students in collaboration with the mentality of the various areas of art and technology that make these ambitious interactive projects possible, including Film / Video, Computer Programming, Visual Art, interactive systems, and much more.
